Approximately one hundred miles to the west of the Spartan city and several thousand feet up, a massive chuck of rock appears, an upside down cone hanging in the sky. Whether it was in motion before the tear in reality brought it into this new world is not clear. Fifteen minutes later, as the impossibly large rock plummets downward deceptively quickly, it slams into the ground. Any observer within a radius of several miles would be incinerated by the heat of impact. Anything within twenty miles is flattened as the massive hunk of earth and stone meets the ground, sending up a cloud of dust that can be seen for hundreds of miles, thousands if the line of sight is clear.

Shockwaves in the ground reach Sparta, shaking buildings and people alike. Some of the early structures, hastily constructed and not at sturdy as the rest of them, crumble. Those on their feet are thrown to the ground, while those sitting or laying are lucky if they escape things falling on them.

The flat area of the rock appears to be covered by debris; which in turn is covered in scorch and cut marks, implying that the destruction was not caused by the fall. There is, however, a solitary structure intact. It's a dark throne, carved from stone and metal, with a crumbling mosiac of three golden triangles on the back. The same symbol is carved on the front, one under each armrest. On the throne sits a dark figure, wreathed in shadow. Red eyes pierce out from the gloom, floating above a gleaming sneer.

"I am the Darkness. This world is mine!"

Marth stands outside the city of Sparta with Rachel and the Spartans that were assigned to the expedition group.

He turns to Leonidas and kneels. "Sir Leonidas, I shall make sure that we bring you news of our expedition and will do what I can to make sure your Spartans come back in one piece." He then turns to Rachel, "I shall also make sure that you are taken care of as well, Miss Rachel" He bows his head to her and mounts the horse that was given to him for the ride. "I am ready to move out when the rest of the group is."

There is no need to go to the trouble. I am more then capable of protecting myself and seeing after my own comfort." Rachel said to his comment and giggled at his comment of keeping the Spartans live. She had seen what these men were like when faced with an unknown person and it seemed to her that Marth would be the one that was protected in harm before he could help the Spartans. She turned to Leonidas "May I see your training camp now?" She asked as she tried to keep the enthusiasm out of her voice.

Leonidas nodded, placing his hand on her shoulder. "Certainly, my lady. Follow me," he said, leading her back into the city.

"Sir Marth," the leader of the Spartan group said, holding out a hand to grip Marth's forearm in a Spartan handshake. "I am Alexander, I do not believe we've met."

One of the other Spartans was looking over the plain at just the right moment to see the ground buckle in a fast approaching wave. "Earthquake!" he shouted, the rest of his warning getting stuck in his throat as the shockwave threw him into the air, along with most of the other Spartans. Those quick enough to drop flat still found themselves airborne, though only for a short time.

Marth, although unfamiliar with the way the spartan greeted him, grabbed Alexander's forearm trying to mimic the handshake as best as he could. "I do not believe we have met either Sir Alexander... It is an honor to meet you and accompany you and your men."

When Marth heard the Spartan yell, he immediately looked up and saw the shockwave coming towards him. With little time to react, Marth braced for impact as the shockwave sent him flying off his horse and the horse flying into the air and Marth landed on his back. He stumbled to get up, grabbing his chest to try to catch his breath from the shock of what just happened.

Marth stumbled over to the 12 Spartans who were caught in the shockwave along with him. "Are you all ok? Is anyone injured?" He started exclaiming in concern that the Spartans, although tough in appearance, had taken serious damage from the shockwave that had just hit.

Rachel heard the rumble of the wave coming but no warning it was coming becuase it came at the back of the group. Rachel knew what that sound was and pushed herself sideways in order to knock King Leonidas off his own feet. She watched as Spartans were thrown and tossed and felt the earth surge under her and the King. As the ground began to lessen its heaving all she could think of was making sure that the King was not hurt and finding out if Marth had been caught as well in the wave. "My apologies my lord" She said to Leonidas as she scrambled off of him "But I figured you didn't want to take flying lessons today." She added with a small grin which quickly turned to a frown. "We must find out what has happened to the search party but we must also go check on Sparta because they had just as little of a warning we did!" Rachel started pacing as she waited for the Kings decision.

Horses aren't as resilient as one would think at first glance. The suddenly bucking ground coupled with the crash back to the earth broke the bones in the legs of many of their mounts. The first Spartans on their feet see to the horses, doing what could be done while waiting for a contingent from the city to come and retrieve the surviving animals.

Of the dozen Spartans, four appeared to have broken legs from either the shockwave or a violent landing. Several others appeared to have broken or bruised ribs or concussions. Alexander himself was saved from a broken neck by his helm; it didn't allow his head to move enough sideways. He would likely end up with a concussion. The Spartans with debilitating injuries limbed back to the city, their armor acting like bronze splints.

"We are... fine," Alexander said, "or at least we will be. Are you injured, Sir Marth?"

Leonidas, in mid fall, recognized the disturbance for what it was and relaxed his body, allowing the ground to fling him into the air and into a roll. He came out of it on one knee. He grinned at Rachel, "I don't exactly make a good bird, either. Come, let's go check on the city."

Marth cringed in pain after Alexander reported to him about the Spartans, holding his chest. "I believe I am not without wounds myself... I seem to have broken some of my ribs in the fall and I cannot lift my left arm." Marth said with his right arm wrapped around his chest and his left arm dangling in the air.

Marth looked up into the city of Sparta and then back to Alexander, "Sir Alexander, should we not go back into the city to check on your people... and also your king? I am worried that they were caught in that earthquake as well... as well as our wounds need to be treated before we venture off." He had said this with a look of pain on his face due to his broken ribs.

Rachel, who had been pacing the ground, brushed herself off and grinned at his comment.

"Lead the way your Highness." She said. She glanced around to see what damage had been done to the party around her. "Looks like we may need to get help here first before helping the city or Sir Marth and his crew." She added in a less jovial tone.

"Perhaps we should return to the city for now, Sir Marth," Alexander said. Among the other Spartans, a conversation started that went something like, "no, let us go on!" "Your leg is broken!" "It's just a flesh wound."

"Reconnaissance can wait. For now, the most important thing to take care of is the city," Leonidas said, heading toward the half-toppled gates. "Spartans! Return to the city and see to the damage!"

Marth nodded to Alexander. "I agree Sir Alexander, we must first check to the status of our comrades."

Marth glanced furiously at the other Spartans and shouted "How can you all say stuff like that? We must go back and check on the status of the rest of the people. What if your king has been injured? I do not know how it is in Sparta, but in Altea, we care for our wounded and help out each other. You all may do what you wish, but I am heading back to check on the city, those who wish to follow may do so."

Marth stumbled away, still holding onto his broken rib bone with his hand. He could feel every step getting more and more painful to take as he marched back to the city of Sparta.

Rachel wandered among the fallen Spartens to see who would need help back to the city, all the time worrying about Sir Marth and the other men in his party.

She turns to the King. "Has anything like this happened before?" she asked as she bent down to check on one of the men's legs.

"Do not pay much mind to their jokes, Prince Marth. It is a very Spartan thing to be able to be made the object of a joke. Our people will attend to one another, and to yourself and Rachel as well." Alexander offered him his shoulder. "If you require it, I can help you back to the city."

Leonidas shrugged. "Only once before have I seen the ground lurch like that, by the eruption of a volcano, and I see neither fire nor ash on the horizon."

Marth nodded to Alexander, "I suppose I shall have to learn to get used to your traditions Sir Alexander", he said as he grabbed hold of Alexander's shoulder. "I do think that I shall take your offer of help, Sir Alexander. My injuries seem to be too much for me to bear by myself" Marth said with a little chuckle afterwards.

Rachel nodded "I too have seen something like this but at the time many things were happening that you couldn't even belive." Rachel looked sad as she remembers a distant memory. She shakes the memory away. "What is the first cource of action?" She asks as she listens to the men banter back and forth.

Alexander shifted his weight to better help carry Marth back to the city. "It looks like we've got a bit to do before we can set out, eh?"

Leonidas watched his soldiers organize themselves and check their injuries. None of them are very serious, but they would be out of commission for a while. He turned back to Rachel. "Now we go back and clean up."

Marth put his left arm around Alexander's shoulders and held his ribs with his right hand as they walked back to Sparta. He chuckled lightly at Alexander's comment. "It would appear so... I just wonder what on earth could have made such a catastrophic earthquake and have caused so much damage as well. It makes me wonder what else is out there past your city walls Sir Alexander."
